Today I’ve been blessed with the “luck of the Irish!” (I am not Irish at all.)
I’ve been arguing with my insurance company about allowing me to have an updated PET Scan as a followup to my “recovery” from cancer. They will only allow me to have a CT Scan of the abdomen and pelvic area. This is ridiculous since my cancer had metastasized when it was discovered, so it could be lurking anywhere. Long story short, to try to come to some resolution about the dispute I made the trek to Mt. Sinai in NYC today to speak to the gynecologist/oncologist who is overseeing my case.
She knocked gently and came into the exam room. When she saw me she broke out in a big smile and said how wonderful I look! I haven’t seen her since last July. After giving me a thorough internal exam and then examining how well I had healed externally, she exclaimed, “It all looks beautiful!”
Beautiful is not exactly how I would describe the results of what happened. But if she feels that way it makes me happy. Several doctors were initially puzzled by my initial presentation (in my groin) and were squeamish about even examining me, so finally meeting and being diagnosed by her was a lifesaver. Up until then, I was terrified.
She grinned at me throughout the exam seeming genuinely happy for me, and we agreed to meet again in November. I don’t even need a PET scan or CT scan because she is satisfied with a scan that was done a few months ago by another doctor. I felt like giving her a big hug, but instead I squeezed her hand and thanked her from the bottom of my heart.
Before she left she asked me, “Are you up to date with your colonoscopy?” I told her it had been way down on my bucket list of medical appointments which made her laugh. “But now it has moved up closer to the top!” I promised her.
Today I got the best news I could have gotten. Now on to the colonoscopy!!!
P.S. Thanks to all of you for being so supportive in response to my Teacher Bashing post of yesterday. I’m sure we’ve all “been there” at one time or another.
Congratulations, Barbara! May the next test end with good news too!

Oh, what a wonderful Slice of Life, and I am so happy you had such news. And you don’t have to keep fighting the insurance company? That’s even better. The moment when your doctor came in and smiled … that’s was the heart of your piece, and your day, no doubt.
