19 Reasons I Participate in the March Challenge

It’s late, and somehow I forgot about writing a post for Sunday. I was so busy responding to comments on my post today and commenting on others’ posts, that I lost track of my usual rhythm. I post after midnight because I am a late riser in the am. (We stay up late in my household.)

I’m going to try to list 19 reasons why I participate in the March challenge.

l. It’s a wonderful opportunity to spread your writing wings
2. I get to meet so many new writers
3. New writers are fun to get to know
4. It’s a pleasure to comment on new writers because they are so grateful (as I was as a newbie)
5. It’s a chance to indulge in favorite contributors
6. It’s an opportunity to have a dialogue with writing pals
7. It’s exciting to see what’s being served up each day
8. It’s a challenge to think of something to write every day
9. It’s an opportunity to try out new ideas
10. It’s a humbling experience to write every day
11. It’s a chance to encourage others who are stumbling
12. I learn so much about different styles of teaching
13. I learn about current teaching practices
14. It continuously renews my respect for teachers
15. It gives us a chance to reflect on our teaching lives
16. It gives us an opportunity to reflect on how our personal lives are affected by teaching
17. I learn so much about new books from Slicers
18. It’s a discipline that leads to feeling more confident as a writer
19. Teachers who write are definitely better teachers!

There…that wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be!

  1. I like the list! I am a first time slicer this year. (My sister is a returnee and got me to try it this year.) I have really been enjoying seeing the wealth of other writers and what they have to say about teaching, their days, their kids, their lives, and books. Books seem to crop up a lot, don’t they? I am having a ball being a part of this great big international group of writers!

  2. Although you touched upon so many of the thoughts I share, I think number ten is the most powerful – “It’s a humbling experience to write every day.” It’s both humbling and empowering. If I wasn’t home at the moment, I am unsure how I would keep up, but I am enjoying the journey and becoming more comfortable in taking risks, so number eighteen resonates with me as well. Thanks!

  3. Love this post! And as a newbie myself, I do appreciate when others comment on my writing! It’s strangely exhilarating to see a new comment on one of your slices! So thank you! And I completely agree with the last: this challenge has truly made me a better writer! Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. Isn’t amazing how important that daily posting in March becomes for those of us who take the Challenge? For me it’s important to support the community of writers who are in the Challenge. I don’t want to let them down, or myself!

    1. I know that I can get into a rut since I tend to write in a certain style. It’s refreshing to get out of that rut occasionally and try new things. I’ll be watching for your post today!

  4. A fantastic list for writing on SOL. I always see your post first and was wondering when yours did not pop up if you had fallen into a snow drift and couldn’t get out! Have a wonderful day! πŸ™‚

    1. I actually wrote the post right up to the deadline, and then was seeking appropriate imagery on the Net. I was surprised when I actually got on the site to see that several others were still up and posting! I was touched to know you were concerned when I did not pop up immediately. Honestly, I don’t try to be first; I just want to get it done so I can go to bed and read!

  5. This is a great listing sure to inspire others. I think #13 is one of the most important reasons I participate. I learn so much form everyone. It offers great PD.

  6. Enjoyed reading your list. I think of #8 but we still come back year after year, some of us continuing with the weekly challenge throughout the year. Yes, we are all better because of this challenge.

    1. I referred myself back to your favorites just to see what held meaning for you. It would be interesting to survey all Slicers to see what the overall favorite reasons are. I suspect there would be no favorites as we all have so many reasons we choose to participate.

  7. There really are so many reasons to participate, and I love this as a format. I would add that it makes me more aware and present in my days, as I’m on the hunt for the moments I want to really reflect on and write about.

    1. Let’s make your idea #20! I could have gone on with more reasons, but I stuck with 19 because it is the 19th day of the Challenge. By the way, I agree with your suggestion: it’s what I’ve been doing myself all month.

    1. You are not alone; other commentors have shown an interest in those “reasons” for Slicing. It was a useful exercise for me to explore “why” I do this. After all, it’s a serious commitment that absorbs a lot of energy and time if you wish to make it worthwhile.

  8. Great reasons why to tackle this challenge and continue to write weekly. I love being able to visit all parts of the country and world when sitting at my desk and engage in a conversation about the little bits of life. Your post really struck a chord with many today.

  9. March: a time for spring, basketball, and slicing! Just like a fear that spring will be slow coming, I fear I’ll wake up, having forgotten the slice from the day before! What a great list! Thank you for sharing with us today! πŸ™‚

  10. What an inspiring post! There are so many great reasons to slice. I always try to find newbie slicers to comment on. I remember how valuable each and every comment was when I was a new blogger–and even now, they give me a thrill! (Might have to borrow this format later in the month! Thanks for the inspiration.)
